![]() but if you keep the heads cool, you won't have to, because it's the heads that heat up the oil to begin with. You can always add extra oil cooling if necessary. small hole/no scoop = less air to the oil cooler(?) is my thinking. Once you decide to go with a venturi shroud, it becomes a question of how much air gets routed to the doghouse oil cooler. i think that bruce tweedle has identified 5 different designs. So including the carbed doghouse fan shroud with no venturi ring, that is 4 different designs the vw factory used. yesterday i had a guy in az bring me a junk venturi ring shroud with the small hole, but no scoop on it. I also have a thing shroud with the large groove and the full-length scoop that directs air into that groove. then decide on which oil cooler hole size to use. the first choice you have to make is whether or not to run the f.i. Your observations are right on the money. Matt, the differences in fan shrouds have been covered in agonizing detail on the clf, and to a smaller extent here. Why did VW have these different designs? Does one cool better than the other? Might explain the poor cooling of my engine.Ĭan anyone shed some light on this? I always thought that all heater ducted, doghouse shrouds were the same, but, I can now see they are not. ![]() Im now wondering if I have a mis-matched shroud & fan on my motor? That I would like to use the best possible shroud for cooling. The difference that interests me the most is the oil cooler passage opening vane since I have a slight overheating problem. The 73 Thing shroud even had the passageway vane for the heater outlets, but, obviously it is a dead end. I have seen that oil cooler passage opening anywhere from 5" long up to about 8-9" long.ĭo all these different shrouds require a different fan? ![]() One even had a little scoop where the air enters that passageway. The size of the oil cooler passage opening is a different size on all of them. I have looked at a 74 shrould(w/ heater ducts), a 73 Thing shroud(w/o heater ducts), and 3 other unknown year fan shrouds. The biggest difference I notice is where the air enters its pathway to the oil cooler. I am strictly talking about doghouse style There seems to be differences in the internal vaneing from shroud to shroud. I started looking closer at a few different fan shrouds I have laying around. Since it seems this is where the VW Brain Trust resides, I would like to ask a question about the T1 Fan Shroud. ![]()
